Last Thursday, July 29, two Flyers softball teams competed against the Morgan Stanley Fightin' Financials at Huber Park in Reynoldsburg. Congratulations to both teams for their competative spirits, hard-work and determination! GO FLYERS!

This Saturday, August 7, is the Area Six Golf Tournament to be held at Blue Creek Golf Course. The golfers tee-off starting at 9:30am. Good luck to the golfers: Don Wharton, Rick Linville, Craig Doles, Mike Doles, Derek Defusco, Sandy Beach, Robert Calbert, David Noll, Chris Ahlers, and Chris Guzzo! Come out and support our Golf Flyers!

2010 National Special Olympic Summer Games

The 2010 National Special Olympic Summer Games, taking place in Nebraska this year, are wrapping up this week. Over 3000 Special Olympic athletes from all over the country are participating in this year's Summer Games. These athletes participate in aquatics, basketball, bocce, flag football, volleyball, softball, golf, rhythmic gymnastics, tennis, track, soccer, and bowling. The Games started last week and will finish tomorrow, Friday, July 23. Franklin County Special Olympics has four athletes participating this year in bowling, softball, and volleyball. What a great accomplishment, congratulations to those athletes and their coaches!

The USA Special Olympics are doing their part to "go green" this year. Here are some of the ways in which they are helping to protect our environment:

-Using local warehouse space to cut down on fuel and the transportation of materials from long distances.

-Limiting the use of paper materials and utilizing other forms of communication. For example, the volunteer process is conducted entirely online.

-Using environment friendly materials where possible. All of the 8000 volunteers' shirts are made of organic material and when printing is necessary, the use of double-sided prints and organic paper is implemented.

-The Games Organizing Committee currently recycles materials such as paper, plastic and aluminum.

-Recycling bins will be at every venue throughout the Games.

Cleveland Salutes Special Olympics at Progressive Field

The achievements of Ohio's Special Olympics athletes will be celebrated on July 28 at the Cleveland Indians baseball game at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. This event is a great opportunity for Special Olympics Ohio to raise some money for the organization and its athletes. Come to Cleveland on July 28 to celebrate the Special Olympics athletes and cheer on the Cleveland Indians as they take on the New York Yankees in the only home series against the Yankees this year. Tickets are being sold by Special Olympics Ohio/Greater Cleveland and are only $16 for the upper deck (regularly $22-savings of $6). For every person in attendance, Special Olympics Ohio will receive $1. AND for every ticket sold by Special Olympics Ohio/Greater Cleveland, the Cleveland Indians will donate $5 to Special Olympics Ohio! This is a great opportunity to support Special Olympics Ohio athletes, the Cleveland Indians and to have a lot of fun with friends and family. See you in Cleveland!

The 2010 Franklin Co. Special Olympics Golf Outing presented by Morgan Stanley/Graystone Consulting was another success. On Monday, June 21 over 100 golfers took to the course at Little Turtle Golf Club and raised money to send the 105 athletes representing Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities at the 2010 Special Olympics Ohio Summer Games at The Ohio State University.

A hero can be found most anywhere - even at a bowling alley.
My friend Joe Schleppi bowls annually in a recreational league with his son Alex, most recently at Gahanna Lanes on Johnstown Road.
Alex, the third of Joe's four children, is a tall, dark-haired 26-year-old with a smile to light up the lanes.
A few days after he was born, he had a stroke - which has left him with the intellect of a young child.
He recently moved from his dad and stepmom's house in Bexley to a group home a mile or so away.
On Thursday nights, Alex bowls.
Everyone in the league knows him. When he isn't taking his turn, Alex struggles to remain still and in his seat. When he steps up to the lane, his toes are always an inch over the foul line. He never takes the customary preliminary steps but stands at the line, vigorously swinging the ball three or four times before flinging it down the alley. Sometimes, he gets a gutter ball; sometimes, he knocks down three or four pins; often, he gets a strike or spare.
No matter how many pins fall, Alex turns around with a beautiful smile. When he has bowled a strike, teammates and opponents alike high-five him. Alex looks to his dad.
Joe isn't a man prone to overt demonstrations of approval or affection. He smiles when the bowling is good; when it's not, he makes a face or a suggestion.
Always, he guides Alex to and from his seat, holding his arm to make sure his son doesn't violate bowling etiquette. He reminds Alex when his turn comes. Rarely do 30 seconds pass that Joe doesn't have a gentle hand on his son.
Teammates keep an eye on Alex when his dad takes his turn. Joe, who played football with Archie Griffin at Eastmoor High School and has medaled in track events at the Senior Olympics, often bowls above 200. Alex's best game is 174.
The score is not the thing. The father-and-son outing is, and Alex clearly has a blast.
He sits close to his dad, often rubbing a hand over his father's shaved head. A glint in the son's eye proves he knows how to tease. If not for the stroke, Joe says, Alex might have become a serious athlete.
What's important for Alex is that his dad takes parenting far more seriously than sports.

Delaware Meet and Summer Games

Excitement for our next meet. The Delaware meet will be held on June 5th. Athletes will be competing in tennis, power lifting, volleyball, and track.

Also, Summer Games is right around the corner. Summer games will be help at The Ohio State University the weekend of June 25th-27th. Sectional Bowling Tournament

The 2010 Franklin County Special Olympics bowlers have made it to the end. The Bowling Season ended Saturday April 17th at HP Lanes. This popular sport sparked the interest of nearly 200 bowlers that participated this season.

With help from staff and volunteers, the bowlers have been practicing at Palace Lanes every Wednesday and Friday to practice and improve their skills that get them ready for their tournaments. These talented bowlers did just that on April 17th. Everyone that was in attendance enjoyed a day of friendly competition and a variety of bowling abilities.

Out of these bowlers some will continue practice in preparation for the 2010 Summer Games that will be help at The Ohio State University June 25th-27th. The other bowlers had the choice to participate and show off their skills in a variety of other summer sports including tennis, power lifting, gymnastics, bocce, roller skating, and track & field.

Yesterday, our blog had our 5000th hit! This is a huge milestone for us and we are so appreciative of the fans that take the time to check out our website and see what our athletes are doing. We have been up and running since November 28, 2008. In addition to posting photos and providing information about our events, we have been able to use the blog to create a network of people who feel connected to Special Olympics.

Super Cash Bonanza

The Knights of Columbus’ Super Cash Bonanza is back, and with it the chance to win one of 20 cash prizes ranging from $1,000 to the grand prize of $49,680! This year, the K of C has partnered with Franklin County Special Olympics in hopes of selling 1,000 tickets to benefit Special Olympians of Franklin County. The tickets cost only five dollars each, and with $2.40 of every $5 ticket going right back to the athletes, this is sure to be a great fundraiser.

All tickets are $5 each and must be returned to the Franklin County Special Olympics office by May 14. The drawing will be held Friday, May 28th at 9pm at the Renaissance Hotel in Cleveland, OH (the winner does not have to be present to win).

Letters containing tickets have already been sent out to many of our supporters, but we have plenty more ready to go out.

2010 Winter Games

Tomorrow, the Flyers head to Northeast Ohio to participate in this year's winter games. The winter games give Ohio's Special Olympians a chance to showcase their skills in either figure skating, speed skating, or downhill skiing. The skating competitions will take place at Kent State University's ice rink while the downhill skiers will go for the gold at Boston Mills Ski Resort in nearby Peninsula, OH. Though the two-day events allow the athletes to embrace their competitive spirit, they never forget the excitement of meeting new friends and getting to escape their regular routine for a few days.

State Swim Meet

The State Swim Meet is here!

The swim meet will take place Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th at The Ohio State University in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion (Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC) at 337 W. 17th Ave). The meet starts on Saturday at 11:00am and on Sunday at 9:00am. On Saturday, the meet will last until around 5:30pm and on Sunday until 12:00pm.

Athletes:

Transportation will be provided from pick up points to the meet and directly home at the end of the day.

Before you come:
-Put on your swimsuit under your clothes
-Eat breakfast
-Bring only what you will need for the day

When you get there:
-Check in with you Meg or Ryan and get your wristband

During the day (Saturday)
-Lunch will be provided
-A small afternoon snack will also be provided
-CHEER ON YOUR TEAMMATES!

When It's Cold Outside...

When winter temperatures drop significantly, staying warm and safe can be a real challenge.

Here are some helpful hints to stay warm and healthy during the cold winter months.

Winter Weather Precautions

-Avoid going outside without proper clothing including hats and gloves.

-Don’t stay outdoors too long in the extreme cold.

-Make sure individuals are well supervised so accidental exposure to extreme temperatures is avoided.

-Understand first aid for Frostbite and Hypothermia so immediate attention can be given in an emergency situation.

-Prepare in advance when conducting outdoor activities and trips. Take along extra clothing, blankets, warm liquids, etc.

-Be very careful with any heating elements. (Space heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, etc.) Assure that all are in good working order before being used for the winter.

-Avoid walking on frozen ponds or lakes unless the ice has been checked and is safe.

Always wear the following to avoid cold related complications:

-Dress in layers of loose, dry clothing.

-Be sure to have a heavy winter or water/wind resistant coat and boots.

-Be sure to cover hands, feet, face, nose and head very well. A warm hat (hood is critical as up to 40 percent of the body’s heat is lost if your head isn’t covered).

-Wear a hat, scarf and mittens/gloves

-When exposure to cold weather occurs for long periods, health emergencies can occur.

Ryan Phillips December Volunteer of the Month!

Ryan was named the December Volunteer of the Month for the Keeping Up newsletter published by the Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio. The newsletter reads:

Ryan Phillips is the Director of Special Olympics Soccer and coaches. Ryan helped us set up the 1st annual Soccer Clinic at Crew Stadium for children with Down syndrome. His dedication and help was instrumental in making this clinic a success! As Director of the Special Olympics soccer he is well aware of the ratio of coach per child and the skills necessary to feel accomplishment. The Crew players even had a great time and jumped right into Ryan’s activities. Thanks again for your dedication to our first clinic and hope you found some future recruits for Special Olympics.

Coaches v. Athletes Wacky Relays and Cannonball Contest

We have some awesome pictures of the first annual Coaches v. Athletes Wacky Relays and Cannonball Contest held at West Central School where everyone had a fantastic time. This was a huge success for our program. What started as a chance to break up the season and have a fun night turned into a raucous affair capped with a competition that had all the drama of a reality TV final episode show.

Nicole Oliver awarded the Agonis Jimmy Crum – Dr. Frank P. Sobolewski Award

Our very own Nicole Oliver has received the Agonis Jimmy Crum – Dr. Frank P. Sobolewski Award that is intended to recognize the accomplishments of athletes with physical, sensory, or developmental challenges from the Agonis Club of Columbus Ohio. The Agonis Club Mission is "To further the bond of friendship among its members; to promote the interest in clean competitive sports and be such service to the community and civic development that would tend to promote better spirit and relationship among the sport-living and sport-participating public of this community."

Nicole Oliver is the epitome of everything good that Special Olympics stands for. Nicole is an unselfish player that puts her team first, is quick with a “congratulations” or a pat on the back as the situation warrants. She is the teammate that, while she may not posses the most natural ability, makes up for it with hard work, persistence and the right attitude. All of these things and more make Nicole a Special Olympian that literally and figuratively stands atop the podium, however, that is not what truly makes Nicole stand apart. For many of us, that is her outgoing personality, quick wit and effervescent smile that is literally contagious. All of these amazing qualities have risen in spite of disabilities and difficulties that have stunted many others. Nicole is truly a jewel of our program. A luncheon was held to acknowledge Nicole and her award.

It's Game Time!

It's time for basketball tryouts for the 2009-2010 season!

Men's basketball tryouts will be held Monday, November 2nd and Tuesday, November 3rd at Bixby Living Skills Center. The times are from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

Women's basketball tryouts will be held Thursday, November 5th at West Central. The times are from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

Area Six Swim Meet!

The Area Six Swim Meet is Saturday, October 31st. This swim meet is the Qualifier for the State Swim Meet in December. It is scheduled from approximately 9:00 AM- 2:00 PM. The meet will be held at the Upper Arlington High School Natatorium (1650 Ridgeview Road) .

Rolling Out The Red Carpet

The 2009 Special Olympics Banquet was a very successful event this year, so much so that they brought out the paparazzi. It took place on Sunday, October 11 where more than 400 athletes, coaches, volunteers, and family members showed up for the yearly event. At the banquet, dinner was served along with an option to augment your wardrobe with some clothing and various items.

After dinner, Ryan Phillips recognized each athlete and coach by announcing their name and having them walk “the red carpet.” Everyone walked with pride while some showed off for the camera. There were loud applauses and high fives given all around the room while each person received praise for the sports they participated in. Athletes received the gift of a baseball cap with Flyers embroidered on the front along with a gray or pink beanie hat.

Once each person was acknowledged the dancing began. The dj, Mark Posner, played music that everyone was able to dance to and sing along with. The dance floor was filled with energy when the music got louder and the banquet was turned into a dance party. With smiles and laughs all around, the banquet came to a close.

Special Olympics has Record Breaking Day!

Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities Special Olympics Unified Golf Program had a record breaking State Golf Tournament at Meadow Links Golf Course & Academy in Cincinnati on Tuesday, September 14. The Unified Team of athlete Robert Calbert and partner David Noll broke the old course record of 39 by two strokes with a blistering 37 on their way to the Gold medal.

All six unified teams, consisting of a Special Olympics athlete as well as one partner from the community, play nine holes in an alternating shot format. The additional teams of Chris Ahlers & Chris Guzzo, Craig Doles & Mike Doles, Don Wharton & Rick Linville, Vernon Clark & Roger Darling and Derek DeFusko & Sandy Beach were all top three finishers and medal winners in their respective divisions.

While all of the athletes and partners navigated a difficult course that included plenty of water hazards and tight fairways, the weather was perfect. Not everything was quite as perfect as the course conditions though. According to athlete Don Wharton, he was “robbed three times” on the putting greens, and though the words may seem harsh the smile on his face and the silver medal hanging from his neck proved his true feelings of the day.

Ohio State Football Parking

Are you looking for a place to park for OSU Football games? Would you like to help a good cause? We have the answer.

The Franklin County Developmental Disabilities Special Olympics program operates a parking lot for OSU football games. All proceeds from the lot go directly to support our Special Olympics program as all lot workers are volunteers. Cost is just $10.00 per game. You can also purchase a season pass for just $70.00 – that’s still just $10.00 a game.

Our lot is located at 250 W. Dodridge between Olentangy River Road and Neil Ave. There is quick access to the bike path plus major streets. We have two entrances for easy in and out.

During the weekend of June 26-28th, 84 Franklin County Special Olympic athletes participated in the 2009 Summer Games. Events included track and field, power lifting, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, bocce, softball throw, roller-skating, and bowling. Many of the athletes taking part of the Games received medals in their events.

Here are a few things the volunteer coaches had to say:

“As a first-time coach, it was great to see the athletes’ hard work pay off during Summer Games. I’m very proud of our bocce players and the teamwork, enthusiasm and pride they all displayed – their spirit was contagious.”

Special Olympics Honors Jimmy Crum

James W. "Jimmy" Crum was greatly missed this year at the Special Olympic Summer Games. Famous for his flamboyant sport coats and infectious smile, he passed away January 5 this year. The Opening Ceremonies of the Special Games were not the same without him as the emcee.

Crum has been greatly involved with the Special Olympics. He was the Founding Chairman of Special Olympics Ohio, established the local programs by recruiting athletes, training coaches, and developing staff. He even saw the beginnings of the Special Games in 1972. For 40 years, he was the "Dean of Central Ohio Sportscasters" where he promoted the Special Olympics. Not only did he concentrate on involving a number of athletes, he got the rest of the community involved as volunteers. With all that, he also helped champion Easter Seals, Children's Hospital, and Recreation Unlimited.

The Golf Outing for Special Olympics presented by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney

On Monday, June 22 The Golf Outing presented by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney was held at Little Turtle Golf Club in Westerville, OH. A total of 26 foursomes played and raised money for Franklin County Special Olympics.

The day ended in a live auction and was preceded by the introductions and a few words by five Special Olympians, Maurice Harris, Kiyanna Ingram, Aaron Elman, Nicole Oliver and Denise Waits. The athletes spent the day on the course with the golfers and enjoyed dinner after the golfing was complete.

Denison and Whetstone Wrap Up

Congratulations to all athletes and volunteers who participated at the Whetstone and Dennison meets. These meets had participants in volleyball, power lifting, bocce, track, and tennis. While all athletes gave outstanding efforts, there were a few standouts from the events.

Mike Bohnlein and Rodney Byrd took first in doubles tennis at Whetstone.
Tyleck Jones took first place in bench and dead lift in power lifting events at Dennison.
Jennifer Curtis, Laura Leeper, Judy Lower, and Monica Randolph’s 4 person bocce team combined to take 1st place at the Dennison meet.

These athletes, along with many others, showcased their talents and determination at the Whetstone and Dennison meets. Here are some shots from the events.

Hydration and Fluids

Bernie Thurn is Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities official on nutrition and would like to give everyone a heads up about the importance of hydration now that the sun is out and the weather is warming up.

Hydration and Fluids:

Water is essential for athletic performance. The human body is made up of 50-65% water by weight. It moves nutrients like glucose, fat and oxygen to the muscles. It helps control body temperature and keeps the joints, organs and tissues working correctly. Water also removes waste products like lactic acid from the muscles. During heavy activity, fluid losses from sweat increase the risk of cramps, heat stroke or exhaustion. The blood thickens with dehydration, making the heart work harder and slowing all the body’s systems down.

To stay well hydrated, athletes need to drink water before, during and after exercising. It is recommended to drink 2-3 cups of fluids two hours before an activity. During continued activity, 4-8 ounces should be consumed every 15-20 minutes. In cases of high activity, weighing the athlete before and after workouts can help figure out fluid needs. For every pound lost, 16-24 ounces of fluid need to be replaced at the end of the session.

Athletes need to make sure that they have plenty of fluids (6-8 glasses) on the days they are not training or competing. Thirst alone may not be a good indicator of the need for water. It is best to spread fluid intake throughout the day. By the time thirst is felt, it may already be too late.

The best beverage to meet fluid needs is calorie-free and inexpensive water. Caffeinated beverages, including coffee, tea, many sodas and energy drinks, act as a diuretic. They provide fluid, but also speed up the loss. Regular sodas, fruit juices and some sports drinks are high in sugar. These do not replace fluids as well as water because the sugars slow the absorption rate. Lower calorie sports drinks, which contain some sugar and electrolytes, are fine when exercising at a moderate to high level for 60 minutes or longer. Less than that and good old cool water is best.

Women's Basketball Takes Home the Silver!

Another exciting state basketball tournament has come and gone in New Philadelphia, Ohio. This year's women’s team did not disappoint, taking home second place at the Kent State branch in New Philadelphia. The team won on Friday but lost a close game on Saturday giving them the medal.

According to head coach Jim Jenkins "The girls set a goal of winning the State Tournament at the beginning of the season. We had our perfect season on the line going into the championship Game, and we came up a little short. Henry County is very well coached talented team, and we have nothing to be ashamed of.

Victoria Harris played an awesome game in the semi-finals, one of the best games of her career. Shanae Gray and Devin Hall were running around playing great defense, in the end we just ran out of steam. All the girls played hard right up to the end but we just couldn't get it done. Great job ladies, we will get them next year with more hard work and lots and lots and lots of running!!!"

2009 World Winter Games

Winter Games a “Lifetime Experience” for Franklin County Special Olympics Pair

Meet Jenny Cunningham and Bryan Fox, two of Franklin County Special Olympics athlete’s who were selected to compete in Sun Valley, Idaho for the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

Nearly 2,000 Special Olympics athletes from 106 countries competed in seven events. The World Winter Games take place every two years and the main focus is to teach athletes to achieve one’s best.

Jenny and Bryan did just that. Originally both were scheduled to compete in the 50 and 100 meter downhill skiing event, but due to an unusual circumstance both were mistakenly put in the 50 and 100 meter Cross Country Skiing division. Both joined the World Games training camp in early December to practice the new skill of Cross Country skiing.

“When we found out that we were not skiing downhill we got very nervous. Neither of us had ever experienced cross country skiing before, said Jenny.”

Even though the two had no experience in their new division of cross country skiing prior to training camp, both had outstanding performances and earned medals. Jenny captured bronze in both the 50 and 100 meter and Bryan won silver in the 50 meter and bronze in the 100 meter.

Jenny explained that downhill is more speed oriented while cross country skiing is different because it required her to ski not just straight down the mountain but move side to side.

Jenny and Bryan made several new friends while in Sun Valley, Idaho. She said it was really challenging at first because many athletes did not speak her language.

With Jenny’s parents on hand to support the athletes Jenny said the trip was a “lifetime experience” for both her and Bryan.

Jenny has competed with the Special Olympics of Franklin County for nearly twenty-four years. She is an accomplished gymnast winning the all-around at Internationals in 1995. Jenny also competes in power lifting and swimming.

Bryan competes in many other events besides skiing including soccer, track, basketball, and swimming.

14 Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities Special Olympics athletes recently had the opportunity to skate at Nationwide Arena with cast members from Disney on Ice. During the hour long session Olympians showcased their best "Superhero moves" thereby freeing Minnie & Mickey Mouse from the clutches of the evil Syndrome. All of the skaters were also treated to a gift bag and tickets to a show.

Bernie Thurn is Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities guru on everything nutrition and recently put together this list of how we can positively impact our athletes to be HEALTHY!

Being a coach for Special Olympics also means being a mentor and a friend. You have a defining influence on your athletes. This includes helping them to develop healthy lifestyle habits that go beyond the playing field. Nutrition and food choices are an important part of being healthy.

Help them understand how eating well will improve their performance
Eat foods yourself that you want your athletes to choose to set a good example
Advise them to drink water in place of pop, sugary beverages or sports drinks
Learn what foods are better choices at fast food restaurants
Talk to your athletes about cutting back on screen time and increasing activity
Healthy snacking means choosing items from the food pyramid not just junk
You can make a big difference in the lives of those you coach

Special Olympics, Ohio State Buckeyes and Channel 10!

Franklin County Developmental Disabilities Special Olympics is proud to have partnered with The Ohio State Buckeyes and Professor Maria Gies. The program pairs OSU students with Special Olympics athletes in basketball and bowling for OSU's winter quarter.

Among the fantastic traditional students we have been fortunate to work with, this quarter we also have some high-profile student athletes as well. These students, Kurt Coleman, Jake Ballard and Devin Barclay, all players on the OSU Football team sat down with 10TV and talked about what Special Olympics means to them. Make sure to keep an eye out for Special Olympics athlete Erich Smith as he finds out the volunteers are OSU Football players!

1.) What are the best experiences or memories with your athlete that you would like to share?

"I love to see Ray score a basket. Even in a practice scrimmage, he makes it seem like he’s never achieved anything so great."

2.) What sets this athlete apart?

"Ray always gives his best and shows up for practice. He’s dependable. We always know Ray will be there."

3.) What makes this athlete unique and/or fun to coach?

"His enthusiasm. He cheers for our team; and cheers for himself. He always has a positive attitude."

4.) If you could describe your athlete in one word what would it be and why?

"Dependable. We know we can always count on Ray to be at practices and at all our games. He comes ready to play."

My First Special Olympics Winter Games

I became an ice skating coach for the Franklin County Special Olympics program through an email stating Special Olympics needed volunteers. I’m not an ice skater myself, but I have been helping to coach Special Olympics gymnastics for the past five years and knew the enjoyment I would get from volunteering, so I didn’t hesitate. I also knew that more than just being involved in the ice skating program, the athletes simply needed my time and a little encouragement.

After a couple months of practice, we were ready to take the athletes on the road. Winter storms may have stopped Columbus residents Tuesday, January 27th, but not the Franklin County Developmental Disabilities ice skating and ski teams. Thanks to our bus drivers, Joyce and Richard, we made it to the Akron area for Winter Games safely.

It means the world to the athletes when they can escape their regular routine for a couple days. It’s not just about the excitement of the competition and standing on the podium, but being with their friends and participating in an event that is just for them.

The competition started out on Wednesday with the figure skater and then the speed skaters. All Franklin County Flyers metaled. The ski team had time trials on Wednesday and when they returned to the hotel many of the athletes talked Ryan into taking them for a dip in the pool. Some of us waived the opportunity, and decided to get some rest.

After a nice dinner, it was time for some dancing. “Dancing with the Stars” has nothing on our athletes. They had a blast! Every athlete was out on the dance floor, having such a great time. They must have danced their hearts out, because not one person complained when the DJ played the last song.

On Thursday morning, I had one athlete come to me at breakfast and say, “Can I have a word with you?” My stomach sank for a moment. I stepped away from the rest of the athletes so that she could talk to me in private. It turned out she just wanted to thank me for spending time with her the past couple days. She wanted to share a little more about herself. I enjoyed our talk, and will always treasure the conversation.

Since the ice skater’s were done competing, we went to the ski lodge to relax and watch the ski team. I was amazed at how well they braved the cold weather. It was another successful day for the Franklin County Flyers.

After awards, it was time to get back on the bus to return home. When we arrived back in Columbus, my car was covered with ice and snow. The athletes were eager to lend a helping hand to uncover my car, once again showing their appreciation. What a way to end the trip.

Athlete Profile:

Meet Bruce Amstutz

Bruce is 17 years old and has been competing in Special Olympics for 4 years. He attends Grandview Heights High School and lives with his mother. Bruce competes in Basketball, Softball and Tennis. He does very well in all three sports. In fact, if you ask Bruce what he is interested in he can sum it up in three words: sports, sports, sports!

Bruce is currently competing in Basketball. He is a starting forward for our Flyers 2 Team. He moved up to Flyers 2 this year after 3 years on Flyers 3. Flyers 2 coach Roger Denick had this to say about Bruce: "Bruce is the type of person who will give you everything he has and then ask how he can be better. He never complains regardless of the situation and sets a great example for our team in terms of work ethic and overall character."

You can see Bruce in action along with the rest of our basketball teams on Monday evenings starting at 6 pm at Bixby Skills Center, 4200 Bixby Road in Groveport.

Special Olympics to Partner with Ohio State Students

Franklin County Special Olympics is pleased to announce a partnership with The Ohio State University students to volunteer this winter. The students will be coaching bowling and basketball for the Franklin County Flyers once a week starting January 7th.

Maria Gies, a second year doctoral student in Sport and Exercise Education, has a passion for serving individuals with disabilities. As a result, she requires students in her Sport and Leisure Perspectives for Special Populations class, to volunteer twenty-two of hours of their time as part of an assignment.

A total of thirteen students will be volunteering including Ohio State football’s starting safety, Kurt Coleman, along with Jake Ballard, Devin Barclay, and cheerleader Matt Wilson.

Wilson who helps with basketball said, “I had a choice of where I wanted to volunteer my time and I chose the Special Olympics because I love sports and the athletes are a lot of fun to work with.”

As you know, Dee Hively is retiring at the end of 2008. How do you thank the woman who took a fledgling Special Olympics program, and through hard work, determination and a passion that escapes words, and turned it into the juggernaut that is the Franklin County Special Olympics program?

To a degree, it is impossible.

Dee has set the standard for Special Olympics, not only in Central Ohio, but across the state. She has done it with patience, passion and persistence. For 30 years, she has bettered the lives of athletes and people with developmental disabilities through her work for the Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities As an ADVOCATE for our athletes, she has worked tirelessly to better their lives. As a COACH, she provided the tools for the athletes to succeed in competition and in life. As a MENTOR, she made volunteers not just be better coaches, but better people. As a LEADER, she has taken this program from infancy to an Olympic caliber sprint.

As a FRIEND, I am proud to say, she is ideal.

For all of these things and more, Dee, thank you and best wishes. We all hope to see you again very soon.

What is Special Olympics?

Special Olympics is a sports training and competition program for citizens with intellectual disabilities. We emphasize not only the competition, but the training of athletes.

Who can compete?

To compete in State events athletes must be 8 years of age and a member of an accredited Special Olympics organization.

Are Special Olympics every four years like traditional Olympics?

Special Olympics is a year-round program with sports seasons similar to high school sports. Every four years there is World Summer Games and every four years there is a World Winter Games. The next World Winter Games is in February of 2009 and will be held in Idaho.

Who can serve as a coach/volunteer?

Everyone who does anything for our organization, with the exception of the director, is a volunteer. Volunteers can do anything from stuffing envelopes to doing laundry, taking pictures or serving as an assistant or head coach.

Our volunteers and coaches come from all walks of life. The primary requirement is a true interest in working with our athletes, commitment to the program and the enthusiasm to make a difference. There is training available for volunteers to learn the specifics of coaching the various sports.

How do I sign up?

The first step is to fill out a volunteer application along with a "Class A" volunteer form. To get these forms please call our office at 342-5984 or email Ryan at Ryan.Phillips@fcbdd.org. The other requirement to volunteer is to take the protective training course online. There is no cost for an athlete to compete in Special Olympics. Our organization pays all costs associated with participation through our fundraising efforts.
